SOA/UFE PREP PROGRAM 2010

This program has been designed to give each Ontario writer an appropriately paced training for the exams you will face.  We have long understood that the earlier an introduction to the basic skills, the better chances of success a writer will have.  We have put together a SOA/UFE training program that is built on this premise.  The components outlined below are all part of the same course and offered as one program; they are not available as individual components.

INTRODUCTION TO THE BASICS (I and II)
Saturday, March 6 & Sunday, March 7 - Toronto or Ottawa
The two day session is available online if you are registering after commencement of the program.

This two-day session will be an introduction to the needed skills for simulation writing.  We will begin by demystifying the process and then teach practical approach, reading, outlining, writing and quantitative skills.  We will also discuss and practice how to evaluate a response and read and debrief a SOA guide.  We will be using two DCS simulations during the coverage; one will be written and marked by DCS markers,  the other will be used to teach evaluation approach.

HANDS-ON LEARNING (I and II)
March 8 through to April 30

During this self-study period, writers will be given three DCS simulations to be written and debriefed either as an individual or in study groups over the six-week period above.  This is an integral way for students to apply the skills introduced.  By writing, evaluating and debriefing these simulations, students will grasp the fundamentals needed to be successful at both SOA and the UFE.  Although there will be no DCS marking provided, supplemental debrief notes, sample responses and online support will be available through the DCS website.

COMP FOCUS DAYS (I and II)
Saturday, May 1 & Sunday, May 2 - Toronto or Ottawa

This will be a two-day lecture series.  There will be one comprehensive simulation written and marked.  An experienced lecturer will teach comp approach, give the writers an opportunity to attempt a comprehensive in the five hour time frame and then give a full walk through of how to outline, read, and analyze a comprehensive.

SOA PREP COMPONENT (TORONTO)

 GROUP I Monday, May 17 - Friday, May 21
GROUP II Tuesday, May 25 - Saturday, May 29

Writers will join back together for five days of lectures and hands-on training.  We will focus on the competency area coverage needed for the SOA and specifically address each area using question examples to demonstrate depth needed.   One comprehensive question and three practice SOA non-comp questions will be written under exam conditions and evaluated by DCS markers.  These questions will be fully debriefed through the lectures to demonstrate the coverage areas.  Valuable study plan and stress management topics for SOA will be an integral part of the five days.

UFE PREP COMPONENT (TORONTO)
  GROUP I Tuesday, Aug 3 - Saturday, Aug 7
  GROUP II Monday,
Aug 9 - Friday, Aug 13

This component builds on the training to date and will focus on refining those critical UFE skills.  Candidates must shift from SOA mode to UFE mode and learn the nuances needed for the UFE.  Competency area coverage will be integrated with practice writing opportunities.  During this component, one comprehensive and four non-comp simulations will be written, debriefed and marked by DCS markers.  There will also be one simulation distributed to be submitted later in the month, which will also be marked by DCS markers.  This will allow you to benefit from professional marking as you progress in your individual UFE study.
